Ivo Preis (born 8.11.1929 in Prague, Czechoslovakia) studied from 1951 to 1958 with Jaroslav Kolar at the Prague Conservatory.
In 1952 he was selected the second best Jazz trumpeter of Czechoslovakia by the "Bop Time Polling".
From 1954 to1959
he played in the Big Band of Karel Vlach and Karel
Krautgartner.
From 1959 until 1964 he played in the Filmsinfonieorchester
Prag (Motion Picture Symphony Orchestra of Prague).
He was appointed to principal trumpet of the Prager Sinfonikern in1964
In 1968 he recorded Berühmte Trompetenkonzerte (Famous Trumpet Concertos) by Telemann, Joseph Haydn, Richter and Leopold Mozart with a chamber orchestra in Prague.
In the same year he fled to Germany. He was offered a job with the Berlin Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan, but chose the position as Principal Trumpet with Rundfunkorchester des HR (Broadcast Orchestra of HR). He remained with this orchestra up to his retirement in 1991.
He also played
with Radiosinfonieorchester Frankfurt am Main
(Radio Symphony Orchestra) and in the HR Big Band with
Heinz
Schoenberger.
In 1979, Ivo Preis went on a Japan tour with the Bachkollegium
Stuttgart.
Preis was the
first in Czechoslovakia to play on a piccolo trumpet.
He was a friend of the German trumpet player Adolf Scherbaum.
