Recordings of the Johann Nepomuk Hummel Trumpet Concerto

By around 1803 the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger had succeeded in interesting Johann Nepomuk Hummel in his "organized trumpet" and performed the resultant piece to great acclaim in the course of one of his concert tours, with the result that Hummel obliged with a second work. His Concerto a tromba principale received its first performance at the Esterhazy court on 1 January 1804. Weidinger himself is believed to have reworked the piece, at least in part, in order to adapt the writing to the instrument's technical capabilities.

Armando Ghitalla was the first to record this concerto. A student of Ghitalla, Merrill Debski, found a reference to the then totally unknown Hummel concerto by accident in the mid '50's while doing research. The student sent for a copy, planning to do the work on his graduate recital. He did not hear back from the library (the British Museum) in time to see or use it on his recital, and the episode was forgotten. The work, however, did finally show up, but well after the grad student had left. With the work in his hands, the rest is history, including the publishing of the piece by Robert King (Music for Brass No. 801, copyrighted in 1959), with Ghitalla's editing and extensive historical notes by Mary Rasmussen, Ghitalla's Town Hall Concert (in 1958), the recording of the work.

This first recording of the Hummel was done in December 1963 and  January 1964  with "Boston  Chamber Ensemble" and conductor Pierre Monteux. It was recorded in Kresge Auditorium in Cambridge, Massachusetts USA, near Boston. Ghitalla played it in the original key of E major, using a C trumpet.

It is on the Cambridge label, CRS1819. The LP also contains the Albrechtsberger, Concertino in Eb and the Molter, Concerto in D.

Today lots of players all around the world have recorded Hummel. Here is a list of some of those recordings:
