Sorry Jack but lip buzzers CAN play pedal tones. I end up playing 1 every 4 or 5 years (always at someones request.)
Pedals are a lifelong crutch and once you start depending on them you MUST continue them.
99% of the people who play them distort their embouchure to do it. And pedals take a lot of work. A real waste of time working on notes that will NEVER be played in public.
The one real benefit (teaching lip movement and pucker) can be learned quicker and with better results in range and endurance. Simply practice the Mendez horn on a string exercise or hold it on your palm like Stevens.
Besides most people who try to increase range with a pedal routine end up with lip swelling. They ignore the pain (a build up of lactic acid). They play pedals (which increase bloodflow and remove the lactic acid). Suddenly their chops don't hurt and they play more. The lips are NOT recovered or rested they merely used a CHEAP TRICK to bypass the body's only injury warning system.
I get lots of business from pedal tones junkies who have injured themselves. Some of them NEVER play again after blowing out their chops. Be careful with pedal tones only learn them in person. And NEVER use them to continue a practice session.
