As a trumpet student of Mr. Caruso for over 20 years, let me explain the rest of the story. There were several books concerning the Caruso system. The first was written in conjuction with Hal Graham in the late 60's and early 70's. Hal Graham also took all the money, and did not give Carmine a cent, according to Carmine. Hal and Carmine also wrote a book for beginning band instruments. Carmine was supposed to get from this too, but never did. The Calisthentics for Brass Instruments was written by Carmine at Herb Alperts requesting in the early 80's, and Carmine did endorse it. In fact, I used it in my later lessons with him, once it had been published.

You are correct in warning people about these exercises. They are great if you do them as directed. Most people try to improve on them and get messed-up.

I miss Carmine dearly. He was my mentor, and friend. After months of battling with my instructor at Ohio State, I would drive to New York and Carmine would get my head "Straight". He was the most positive influence to my trumpet playing that I had in all my years of playing. He brought me from a measly 18-year old, barely capable of holding an A above the staff, to what I am today.
