Subject: RE: Donald Reinhardt

Hi Rune,

My name is Matt Graves.  I have a good friend that studied with Reinhardt.  Unfortunately, my friend does not own a computer and presently has no interest in the internet.  In my discussions with him regarding Reinhardt, he indicated that Reinhardt's terms and method of teaching was often confusing in person let alone reading his text. However, my friend swears by it, and I have seen some improvement in his range over the years as he more diligently applied Reinhardt's teaching in his daily practice.

My problem with Reinhardt's approach is that he focuses too much on the appearance and minute changes in the movement of the lips.  I suppose this bothers me mostly because I subscribe to the Claude Gordon Approach of "put the mouthpiece 2/3 on the upper lip," always take a "Big Breath" and keep the "Chest Up" and forget about what the lips and facial muscles are doing.  Claude's idea is that this allows the individual to naturally develop their given physique rather than be enslaved to the theories of the "experts."  Since everyone is slightly different even within certain "types" this makes more sense to me.  Also, my experience in my systematic development under Claude's guidance also helped to confirm this.

My 2 Cents,

Matt Graves
