Jake's concepts -some he learned from Ernest S Williams, some he developed
himself, some he borrowed from others - still amaze me today. You can play
with a bigger sound, more control, power and range and make more music
with
LESS physical effort than you think. Eliminating isometric tension
was a big factor, although he never called it that.
However, most important to him was using your ears and making music - spending more time listening to what your playing rather than mindlessly hacking through exercises, etudes and pieces. He was very into making the most of every note, song and practice session, thus leaving more time for "life" ("Hangin, " as Bob called it!)
Please feel free to write me if you want more inside info on Jake - I studied with him over a period of 10 years. Sparky and Bob can give you much insight as well.
Good Luck!!
John Julian
