Subject: Re: scales--techniques for memorizing

I've got a great technique for learning new scales. I call it the "Scale Expansion" exercise and it works with any scale. Here is a solfege example:

||: Do Re Do :||  10 X's
||: Do Re Mi Re Do :||  10 X's
||: Do Re Mi Fa Mi Re Do :||  10 X's
||: Do Re Mi Fa So Fa Mi Re Do :||  10 X's
||: Do Re Mi Fa So La So Fa Mi Re Do :||  10 X's
||: Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti La So Fa Mi Re Do :||  10 X's
||: Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re Do :||  10 X's

An important part of this exercise is to never look at the scale while you are actually playing. You can look at it between repetitions, but never while you play.

Consider this a free sample of my latest book, the second edition of "The Physical Trumpet Pyramid". There are other techniques in this book which also help scales. The "Scale Expansion" exercise is specifically designed to learn new scales.
