Notes
from the Jazz Masterclasses
These sessions had music students accompanying on piano, drums and
bass. The notes are short, rather telegramic in style, and maybe of most interest to those who attended
the jazz classes.
"It's You or No One" (standard tune)
-
(A.V to player) This was nice!
-
(A.V. to the rest of us) What was the form?
-
Standard tunes has standard number of bars - this one 32 bars (A A - no
bridge)
-
You play by feel - but not by counting
-
Listen to Max Roach - he changed drumming
-
A.V. join in and they play the tune again each taking a chorus.
-
A.V. admits he has no absolute pitch: has to check the chords in the music.
-
"Talk to us" says A.V. to the young player (kind of an interview):
-
"How long have you played?" - 8 to 9 years. Now studying jazz at NMH.
-
"How do you learn a tune?" - First the tune, play along with CD, I play
myself into the music, practicing the chords, then a scale on the chords.
-
What is jazz? - a feeling, music mixed from blues with a swing, has to
be improvised, commercial music is not jazz
"Joy Spring" (Clifford Brown)
-
play the chords
-
try to start on the 7'th and go down.
-
A.V. and player play's the chords.
A. V. talks about Improvisation
Improvisation can be:
-
jazz
-
free music - some of it even sound better than a lot of the contemporary
pieces.
The two players (who improvised) + A.V. plays an improvisation for 3.
(fl.horn, trumpet & muted trumpet) - nothing prepared, just call and response.
-
can also use scales to get a more melodic feel
- imitate patterns or pitch
- don't like patterns book. The solo tend to sound like patterns
- learn from othr folk's solos. Write them down (transcription)
"What is this thing called love" (Cole Porter) in quick tempo
-
leave space (for endurance) - but also composing
-
stay away form strong beat
-
play ending on nine's (sometimes tonic)
"So What" (Miles Davis)
-
a modal tune
-
two dorian scale
-
form 16:8:8
-
What are you trying to do?
-
A.V. comment on the player playing to soft:
-
The record "Kind of Blue" is a bit misleading (dynamic)
-
Miles producer, Tale Mazur knew the sound Miles liked from his recordings.
-
Miles played strong
-
Not many E's in the E-dorian (on trp) mode.
-
The dorian note (6th) - use it
-
Melodic & rhythmic - fragment - basic
-
A.V had the pianist take a rhythmic pattern and use it for the whole chorus
-
A.V plays "duet" with piano
-
The more you relax the better you'll play
-
The player does it once more (stronger)
-
A.V "a nice flow"
"Joy Spring" (Clifford Brown)
-
I like the way you play it
-
Clifford could play smooth but with accent
-
"ghosted notes"
-
II-V-I progression
-
Using and believing your ears
-
"laid back" in soloist is important in this type of music
-
lay back and catch up
A.V. speaks about different styles:
-
get right equipment - make right sound
-
Callichio trumpet for someone
-
Style of mouthpiece dictates color
-
A. V. uses several mpc's (dark, bright)
-
Concept of sound
"Beautiful Love" (trombone player)
-
Great!
-
Let us just play (A.V. has nothing to say)
"Blue Bossa"
-
A.V. play fl.horn with trombone player
-
Just a great playing session!
